Raúl Calvo Royo was born in Vinaròs (Spain). As the tradition in Valencia goes, he began his career as a trumpet player in a windband. After nine years in the Musicschool of his hometown, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Barcelona as part of the Trumpet class of Mireia Farrés. He also took lessons with Mathew Simon (Jazz-trumpet) and Serge Tizac (Barroc-trumpet).

After finishing music highschool, he won a two-year position at the Orchester Akademie of the Opernhaus Zürich and completed his studies in the ZHdK (Zürcher Hochschule der Kunste) with the Orchestral and Soloist Diploma in the trumpet class of Frits Damrow.

As an orchestral trumpeter, Raúl has played with Orquesta Sinfònica de Barcelona, Orquesta del Gran Teatre del Liceu, Orquesta Sinfónica del Vallés, Orquesta de Gran Canaria, Orquesta de la RTVE, Real Filarmónica de Galicia, Oviedo Filarmonía, Orchester des Opernhaus Zürich, Kammerorchester Basel and Zürcher Kammerorchester. He has also performed with the Gustav Mahler Jungendorchester and participated in the Schleswig Holstein Musikfestival.

Raúl has won prizes in several trumpet competitions: second prize at the Yamaha National Trumpet Competition Valencia (2006), second prize at the Concours de Trompette à l'Isle sur la Sorgue (2013), first prize at the Kiwanis Musikpreis Zürich (2015) and second prize at the Kiefer Hablitzel Wettbewerb Bern (2015).

From September 2017 he is a regular collaborator at the Orquestra del Gran Teatre del Liceu.
