Forrest is a senior at Langley High School in McLean, VA. He began studying the trumpet with his dad, Richard Johnston, when he was six years old. Over the past eleven years, Forrest has enjoyed playing in a variety of settings, ranging from large wind ensembles and symphony orchestras to small chamber groups and solo settings. 

Forrest is currently a member of the American Youth Philharmonic and the Brass of Peace, as well as the Langley Wind Symphony and Jazz Band. This past summer, as one of four trumpeters selected from the United States for the National Youth Orchestra of the USA / NYO2, he toured Asia as a member of the National Youth Orchestra under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. He also attended the Chosen Vale International Trumpet Seminar in Enfield, NH. 

Forrest particularly enjoys performing as a soloist and has participated in numerous national and international competitions over the past 9 years. He is a five-time winner of the National Trumpet Competition, including winning the high school division of NTC in 2017 and 2018, and the International Trumpet Guild (Official) Youth Solo Competition. In addition to his musical interests, Forrest is an avid member of his school’s cross country and track teams.
